Duval & Stachenfeld LLP – The Pure Play in Real Estate Law – is pleased to announce that partner Jessica Millett is now co-chair of its Tax Practice Group.
Ms. Millett joined Duval & Stachenfeld LLP in 2012 after beginning her career at Linklaters in their prestigious global tax group. Ms. Millett’s practice focuses on the U.S. tax issues that arise in real estate transactions, with particular expertise in navigating complex cross-border real estate deals. She advises clients on tax structuring and documentation for real estate acquisitions, joint ventures, platforms, restructurings and refinancing arrangements, including inbound and outbound investments, and structures involving REITs. She represents commercial real estate developers, as well as investors such as sovereign wealth funds, overseas pension funds, REITs, and sponsors and managers of, and institutional investors in, private investment funds including real estate and distressed debt.
Ms. Millett is known by both her colleagues at D&S and clients alike to be particularly adept at translating complicated tax concepts into practical advice. She also keeps her clients and colleagues up to date on new developments in tax law relevant to the real estate industry, either through written articles or by hosting presentations, and she has been a speaker at ABA Tax Section meetings.
Bruce Stachenfeld, the managing partner of Duval & Stachenfeld, said: “We are the Pure Play in Real Estate Law. Everything here is about that. Jessica is the perfect tax lawyer for our firm. Real estate clients don’t like working with her – they ‘love’ working with her. She does what they need, which is that magic formula of creatively figuring out how to get them from Point A to Point B, while at the same time making sure they never get into trouble. I am so happy to have Jessica as co-chair of tax – she deserves every bit of her success.”
“It has been a real honor seeing Jessica’s career trajectory,” said Stephen Land, co-chair of the Tax Practice Group, “going from a rising star junior tax associate to a powerhouse tax partner in demand with some of the leading global real estate companies in the industry.”
Terri Adler, chair of the real estate group, added her view, stating, “Part of my job is to make sure our clients receive outstanding legal work and service. Jessica has been a stellar example of an amazing lawyer with creativity and an in-depth understanding of tax issues, enabling our clients to achieve their business goals without jeopardizing their tax positions. Jessica is a key component of our success and I am thrilled to see another woman step into a senior role at the Firm.”
Ms. Millett said, “Before I joined D&S, one of the criteria of what I was looking for next in a law firm was a place where I could really set roots and help in growing a premiere tax practice. I am so happy at what I, along with my co-chair, Stephen Land, have been able to accomplish in just 6 short years and am excited to continue building on this success for years to come.”
Ms. Millett was named as one of CRAIN’s 100 Leading Women Lawyers in New York City and a Super Lawyers New York Metro Rising Star. She is Chair of the Subcommittee for Foreign Investors of the ABA Tax Section Real Estate Committee. Ms. Millett is also chair of D&S’s pro bono committee.
